Reflexology

Reflexology is one of the most powerful complementary therapies in the UK.  Reflexology is based on the principle that certain points on the feet and hands correspond to specific parts of the body.  Therefore, applying pressure to these reflex points brings balance and equilibrium to the body and may alleviate and improve symptoms such as everyday stress and tension.

Reflexology has been practised by many cultures and in various forms for millennia. Reflexology treats the body holistically – body, mind and spirit.

Following any trauma or stress, reflexology practitioners believe that the body can be out of balance and the cause must be treated rather than just the symptoms. If one area of your life is out of balance it is normal for this to effect another area.

Reflexology can be used simply for relaxation as well as to maintain good health. The treatment is relaxing and can help reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. It is suitable for people of all ages and for each person the effects of the therapy are unique.

Try regular reflexology sessions for:

  • Stress/anxiety
  • high blood pressure
  • constipation and IBS
  • sleep disorders
  • pain relief
  • asthma and allergies
  • skin problems
  • headaches and migraines
  • sinus problems
  • menstrual irregularities
  • depression
  • poor circulation
  • pregnancy (and post-natal)
  • post-operative recovery
  • jetlag

What happens during treatment?

Consultation

During the first session I will take a history of your condition and your general health, and explain a little about reflexology therapy.

Non Invasive

Reflexology is non-invasive  but you will be required to remove your footwear and socks if you are having foot reflexology. Sessions are carried out on a comfortable massage couch.

Visual Exam

I will make a visual and tactile examination of your feet (or hands) before beginning the precise reflexology therapy. Appropriate pressure for the clients comfort will be used.

Sensations

You may feel warmth and experience a tingling sensation in your feet and the rest of your body during your treatment. You may also feel relaxed and drowsy and it’s perfectly normal for clients to fall asleep during their therapy sessions.

Treatment Plan

Each treatment plan is individually tailored – a clearer picture regarding your problem and approximately how many sessions you may need will be obtained following the initial detailed assessment.

Cost

Cost is dependant on the treatment type and duration of your individualised plan.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WILL THE TREATMENT HURT?

No it shouldn’t hurt but you may feel some discomfort if I find an area that is out of balance or congested. The discomfort will only be short lasting as I work through it. With each treatment individually tailored to you the pressure applied will be within your own comfort zone.

WILL MY PRIVATE HEALTH PLAN COVER THE COST OF REFLEXOLOGY?

Some private health cash plan providers accept CNHC registration as a condition for paying claims. These include Health Shield, Simply Health and a number of specific employer plans with Westfield Health. You will need to check that Reflexology treatments are included in your plans.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

I recommend loose, comfortable clothing that you feel relaxed in as you will be reclined during the treatment.  Apart from the removal of your shoes and socks for foot reflexology you will remain fully clothed.

CAN YOU DIAGNOSE WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME?

A qualified registered Reflexologist will never diagnose or name an illness and will not prescribe or adjust your medication. Reflexology will complement  your medical care not replace it.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?

There are no known negative side effects. Reflexology helps the body to rebalance so clients may occasionally experience a natural healing response where the body begins its self-healing process and elimination of toxins.  For example this could manifest itself in  feeling tired, an increase in urination and loosening of the bowels. However these reactions are temporary and should clear within 24-48 hours.

There is increased evidence that complementary therapies including reflexology can help in a palliative setting. I have been trained in adaptive reflexology to be aware of the changing needs of the client and to work safely and effectively with the very sick and the terminally ill.  The pressure applied and treatment techniques are tailored to the individual and the sessions will focus on relaxation and stress release and the treatment is gentle, non-invasive and calming.

FACIAL REFLEXOLOGY

A great new Facial Reflexology treatment to reduce stress for health and wellbeing.

This award winning Bergman Method Facial Reflexology treatment can help to reduce symptoms of common ailments, including migraines, bruxism, sinus problems, stress, insomnia, IBS, joint pain and depression. The lovely side effect of having reflexology on the face is that it leaves you with a healthy glow on the outside. This helps you look better and younger, whilst improving your health and wellbeing.

The face provides a beautiful and precise tool to read what is going on within the body. Bergman Method Facial Reflexology is built on a combination of Native American techniques and Asian body maps that chart the reflex points on the face, combined with Zone Theory. Facial Reflexology can be a wonderful therapy to help identify reflexes out of balance and to help you improve your health and well-being.

As an added benefit to the treatment session, the face will feel and look smoother and more toned as the increase in circulation helps to release muscle tension. Some clients call it their ‘mini facelift’ by helping to improve skin tone and promote lymphatic drainage. Experience the benefits of the Zone Face Lift Facial Elixir used in the treatment, winner of the 2018 Beauty Shortlist Awards – Best Facial Oil.

PRECISION REFLEXOLOGY

I recently underwent training in Precision Reflexology, a form of reflexology that was initially developed by Prue Miskin in  the 1980s and early 1990s and has since been further developed by Jan Williamson.

Precision reflexology is a form of reflexology and it follows the same principles as ‘traditional’ reflexology in that certain points on the feet and hands correspond to specific parts of the body. Therefore applying pressure to these reflex points brings balance and equilibrium to the body and may alleviate and improve symptoms such as everyday stress and tension.

However, the aim of precision reflexology is to connect to a persons energy systems, to adjust it and to harmonise it within itself and with the world surrounding that person. During the treatment we work with this internal energy and accept that the body is a dynamic energy system that is constantly changing.

The treatment does not rely on force or physical pressure and as such is a very gentle therapy. It has the potential for great power even with this gentle pressure and is very effective on any painful reflexes or for fragile and vulnerable clients. The specific technique which is used is called ‘linking’ and this involves holding two identified reflex points at the same time to add power and definition to the treatment. As the link is held, the therapist pauses and is aware of ‘listening’ via their hands and therefore each treatment is unique to the individual. The linking is the feeling of the energy between the two reflex points. The vibration can be felt as a tingle, a pulse, a strong beat or a feeling of warmth. The main benefit being that it provides subtle access to the body energies of each client, giving an added dimension to each session and allowing the therapist to respond fully to the needs of each person. Each individual can receive the benefits in a way that is appropriate to them at the time and each persons own energies are used to heal themselves.

REFLEXOLOGY LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE

I am excited to be able to offer RLD, an award winning reflexology technique which focuses on stimulating the lymphatic reflexes on the feet. The aim is to cause an effect on the lymphatic system in the body.  It is a unique sequence that has been researched and developed by Sally Kay BSc (Hons), whilst working in Cancer Care. The results appear to support the theory of reflexology.

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in the UK. According to Cancer Research UK approximately 20% of patients will have lymphoedema of the arm after breast cancer treatment that includes surgery to remove lymph nodes or radiotherapy to the lymph nodes in the armpit.

Lymphoedema is defined as tissue swelling due to the failure of lymph drainage.  After breast cancer, a person may experience psychological or emotional difficulties due to altered body image, and a swollen limb can exacerbate this.  Research suggests that survivors with lymphoedema are more likely to suffer psychological and emotional difficulties, be more disabled and experience a poorer quality of life than survivors without the condition.  Improved breast cancer survival rates suggest that approximately 2:3 women survive the disease beyond 20 years.  This mean that more people are living longer with this debilitating side effect for which there is currently no cure.

Lymphatic drainage massage (MLD) is used to treat conditions other than lymphoedema, and RLD may be used similarly.  MLD may be useful for the following conditions:

FERTILITY & MATERNITY

Approximately one in seven couples experience fertility problems whilst trying to conceive and unexplained infertility can be difficult to come to terms with.  It can lead to high stress levels so reducing tension with a balancing and relaxing fertility reflexology session is a great idea for both males and females. The treatments for female clients are tailored to your monthly cycle.

At certain stages of IVF treatment it is not advisable to have reflexology.  Advice and permission from your specialist will be needed as to when reflexology can be restarted.

PREGNANCY

So great news you’re pregnant! As your body changes through the various stages of pregnancy you can try reflexology for the following common pregnancy symptoms:

  • Morning sickness and dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Food cravings
  • Mood and emotions
  • Overactive bladder
  • Constipation
  • Painful breasts
  • High blood pressure
  • Oedema (fluid retention)
  • Back Pain
  • Heartburn
  • Digestive disorders
  • Headaches

It is also a great opportunity for pregnant women to enjoy feeling pampered and relaxed.

LABOUR

So the big day has arrived but the baby hasn’t, I can work with you to help get things moving and preparing you for giving birth if the baby is near time.   This treatment includes a lot of relaxation techniques to help make the labour less stressful.

Please note, it is advisable to get permission from your midwife if you are considering reflexology during your pregnancy.

POST NATAL

Post-natal reflexology helps new mothers adjust to life with a newborn baby by supporting you as your body and cycle return to normal.

These sessions can be used as special me time to encourage relaxation and bring balance back to the body and assist in returning to the equilibrium of the pre-pregnancy state.

HAND REFLEXOLOGY

Hand reflexology is as old as foot reflexology and is generally used in addition to the main foot session but it is a very powerful and effective stand alone treatment.  If you don’t like your feet being touched then hand reflexology is a great way of receiving the benefits of reflexology.

The principle works in the same way that your body is mapped onto your hands and by applying pressure to the reflex points will bring the body back into balance.

It has the advantage of assisting you with your own healing as ‘home-work’ between your main treatments.
